Breaking News: Politicians Suddenly Discover Government Has Been Spending Money

Republican concerns about federal misspending should be at least coupled with concerns over Musk and dismantling of government

During Trump's first term, when Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress and the White House, there were few calls for ending federal aid and grants, eliminating USAID, etc. Similarly, throughout Biden's presidency, these supposed areas of waste remained largely unaddressed by Republican leadership.

The timing of this renewed interest reveals how some elected officials were not doing their jobs overseeing the government. Federal funding could have been investigated and addressed during the past seven years of Republican and Democratic administrations.

Genuine oversight and waste reduction should be consistent priorities, not convenient talking points that surface only to make political points. Iowans should ask our federal delegation whether the real goal is responsible governance or political theater.

I have been calling and writing our federal delegation on many issues. I am asking them to spend as much time monitoring the DOJ, Musk, FBI, and DNI, as making some of these political points.
