Let Iowa's neediest children have access to the largest summer benefits, across the widest scope, to the greatest in need. Or offer crumbs
Governor Reynolds food insecurity program
Governor's summer meal grants amount to "crumbs for Iowa kids"
Governor Reynolds' summer meal grants for Iowa's children fall short of meeting the needs of our most vulnerable. are insufficient compared to the scale of food insecurity many Iowa families face. A recent column on Bleeding Heartland aptly describes the grants as "crumbs for Iowa kids." This description underscores the need for more substantial and comprehensive support for our children during the summer months when access to school meals is limited.
In light of this, I urge readers to share this article with their elected officials and request additional steps to address food insecurity in Iowa. Governor Reynolds should consider reversing her decision and applying for federal funding, as even the Governor of Nebraska has done.
Furthermore, it's crucial for local food pantries, public health offices, and non-profit organizations to receive outside advocacy and support. The over 200,000 children relying on food and reduced lunches cannot be the advocates for change.
Elected officials should take a cue from Rep. Sami Sheetz, who has scheduled a hearing on food insecurity in Cedar Rapids. More forums and round tables should be organized to address this issue at the local level.
The Bleeding Heartland story highlights that some rural Iowa counties lack sufficient food pantries, with some having none at all. These areas could benefit greatly from the $22m in federal funds, which come with minimal restrictions.
Let's encourage our state legislators to follow in Rep. Sheetz's footsteps and hold roundtables and forums on more issues that demand and deserve greater public awareness and scrutiny.
thanks Kay .Consistency is not as important as closed minded to competing views and considerations.
I am providing some media coverage of the reasoning given by our Governor.
Iowa was among 17 states that did not seek federal money for children’s food aid – "GOP governors indicate they don’t want handouts from Biden administration" . As reported in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, https://www.thegazette.com/state-government/iowa-among-20-states-that-wont-seek-federal-money-for-childrens-food-aid.
From Axios, https://www.axios.com/local/des-moines/2024/01/03/iowa-rejected-child-food-aid-kim-reynolds-biden .
According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 Iowa children faces food insecurity, and nearly half of Iowa's children receive USDA free and reduced-price meals during a normal school day.
This is the same legislature that passed a law to prohibit guaranteed income programs from being implemented at the local levels. This is the same legislature composed of farmers who have received millions in dollars in AG subsidies.
So the same Republicans who claim that unborn life is sacred - don’t want to accept FEDERAL dollars (not even their “own”) to feed those living, breathing children????
Hypocrites!!!
That’s NOT Christian!!!
